About Me

Personal Life

Karim SERHAN MD was born and raised in the heart of the beautiful city Beirut (Lebanon). He attended a French school and then joined an American University for higher studies. This unique mix of heritage (Arabic, French and American) allowed to learn the values and understand the subtleties of each of those different cultures.

Dr. Karim graduated from the American University of Beirut with both a Medical Doctorate and a Master of Science. His thesis was focused on a novel biomarker for breast cancer detection. Following graduation, he completed a research fellowship at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University (Maryland, USA) in Regenerative Medicine and Bio-engineering. His work culminated in the publication of over 50 scientific articles.

He then completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of Toledo (Ohio, USA). He logged the highest number of surgical cases among his colleagues focusing on surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and has multiple additional training certificates.

Dr. Karim SERHAN finally joined Burjeel Royal Hospital (Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE) in 2022 (after spending a total of 10 years in the USA). He is a Consultant Surgeon and Head of the Surgery Department. He is proud and honored to serve the very kind population of the United Arab Emirates.

International Recognition

Dr. Karim SERHAN’s commitment to medicine is evident in his prolific academic profile. He is published in top-ranked international scientific journals in the fields of Surgery, Bioengineering, and Material Science. He also holds editorial roles in high impact medical journals (Frontiers in Surgery, Frontiers in Pediatrics, etc.…). In addition, he posses two innovative patents that he developed during his research years at Johns Hopkins University (US Patent # 10500305, December 2019; and C17068, October 2021, status pending).

Karim SERHAN, MD is the recipient of many research grants and research awards, including the best basic science paper at the Johns Hopkins Surgery Research Symposium, the basic science research grant prize from the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand, the Research Pilot Grant Prize from the Plastic Surgery Foundation, and a Scholarship Award from the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Karim SERHAN has authored to date 49 peer-reviewed articles, 11 book chapters, and 48 peer-reviewed abstracts. In addition, he has given 30 presentations/lectures in various national scientific conferences.
